Work Starting Between Four Mile Run, County Line

Pre-construction work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 10 on the west end of Columbia Pike between Four Mile Run and the Arlington/Fairfax County line. The work is part of the County's project to make Columbia Pike a safer, more accessible route for all users, which includes upgrading and undergrounding utilities and improving the streetscape.

The first major activity is the relocation of the in-street gas main, which will start this month and is expected to last until fall 2017. Washington Gas is required to relocate their gas main prior to the County beginning construction.

What to expect during the Washington Gas gas-main relocation:

  • There will be traffic disruptions and lane closures while Washington Gas crews are in the street.

  • Around the work zone on Columbia Pike, at least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times.

  • Washington Gas will stage equipment and materials at several locations along Columbia Pike. Access to adjacent properties will remain open, but bus stops at these locations will be relocated or removed during construction.

  • In addition to weekday work, weekend and night work are possible. Night work will be limited to intersections.

Additional information can be found on the County's project webpage.

Columbia Pike Transit Stations - Project Update

Last October the County Board voted to further reduce costs for the transit stations project by choosing a design concept that includes the option of mass-producing components for the station shelters and partially assembling them in a factory. Since then, County staff, working with a design consultant, have been developing specifications that will be used to purchase the station shelters.

The consultant also is working on design plans showing how the stations will fit into the first 6 locations slated for construction. These plans will be shared with the community this spring.

The transit stations are a major feature of Arlington’s planned Premium Transit Network connecting Columbia Pike, Pentagon City and Crystal City.
