2015 Neighborhood Day Activities

Chestnut Hills Playground Ribbon Cutting & Project Play Launch: On Saturday, May 9 at 11:30 a.m., come celebrate the recent renovations at the Chestnut Hills Park Preschool Playground and learn more about Project Play NoVa! Playground improvements include new equipment, surfacing, pedestrian circulation (including ADA accessibility) and site furnishings. FitArlington will be on site to promote the new Northern Virginia Project Play website, novaplays.org, which will be launched in 2015. Stop by the Project Play booth for a FREE foldable water bottle (while supplies last) and learn how the website works. Family Fitness Day in the Park: On Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., bring the whole family to Penrose Park to get outdoors! Event highlights include fitness classes for all ages, fun games, moon bounces ($3 all-access bands), nutrition and fitness demonstrations and concessions for sale (cash only). Echoes of Little Saigon: On Saturday, May 9 from 1-3 p.m., learn about Clarendon’s Vietnamese heritage at the Echoes of Little Saigon event at Clarendon Central Park. The County Board proclamation and guest speakers will begin at 1 p.m. Join in on a walking tour narrated by former community members at 1:30 p.m. From 1:30-3 p.m., enjoy public art and art activities led by artist Khánh H. Lê and go on a self-guided smartphone walking tour. This event is presented by Arlington County Historic Preservation Program, Arlington Public Art, Urban Affairs & Planning in the School of Public & International Affairs, Virginia Tech, Arlington Department of Parks and Recreation and Clarendon Alliance. Welcome Back Hummingbirds: On Saturday, May 9 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Gulf Branch Nature Center and Park, the whole family will enjoy learning about our fabulous flyers with hands-on activities and games. Each family will make a hummingbird feeder of their own to provide a welcome feast for these tiny jewels as they migrate back to our area. Information: 703-228-3403. 20th Annual Walk for the Animals and Pet Festival: On Saturday, May 9 from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., step forward for shelter animals at Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s 20th Anniversary Walk for the Animals and Pet Festival at Bluemont Park. For two decades Arlington County’s largest pet-centered event has brought two-legged and four-legged residents together for a day of celebration and fun to benefit shelter animals, services and programs supported by AWLA. Lace up your walking shoes, leash up fido and join hundreds of animal enthusiasts for a 5k walk or one-mile stroll through the park. After the walk, the 20th anniversary celebration will continue with a newly added Pet Festival. This year you can look forward to:

– Eating a savory bite from food trucks

– Shopping pet-related vendors

– Showing off your pooch at the Photo Booth

– Creating arts and crafts at the Kid’s Corner

– Playing with adoptable shelter dogs

– Much more!

Barcroft Elementary Spring Fair: On Saturday, May 9 from 4-6 p.m., join in on a fun family-friendly event with games, bounce house, concessions, cake walk, games and prizes! Campfire: Super Snakes: The whole family is invited to join us on Saturday, May 9 from 7-8 p.m. at the Long Branch amphitheater for lots of old-fashioned fun as we learn about our elongated, fork-tongued friends. This engaging program will be filled with entertaining activities, which may include stories, special animal guests, games, songs and of course, treats such as s’mores.
