Thursday, June 20. Financial Success Classes. Come to these free classes to learn about how to make your money go further and how to achieve your goals through smart money management strategies. Classes will focus on goal setting and budgeting, credit and debt management, and creative saving strategies. Everyone who attends all three classes will receive a certificate of completion. Saturday, June 22. 5th Annual Regional Soccer Tournament. Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force in partnership with Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) will host our 5th annual regional soccer tournament at Washington-Lee high school in Arlington, VA. This tournament provides an opportunity for 100 at-risk youth between the ages of 12-16 to enjoy a day of fun, teamwork and a chance to win prizes. More importantly, the tournament serves as an opportunity for our youth to learn about the extracurricular programs in our community centers as well as those offered by NVFS. These programs provide teens with the opportunity to engage in positive recreation and personal development activities. Teens participating in programs like those offered by NVFS and Arlington Parks and Recreation are less likely to become involved in gangs, engage in substance abuse and other destructive behaviors. The National Gang Crime Research Center reports that 80% of gang members reported they would leave the gang if offered the right help. Each participant will receive a t-shirt with a large logo message “DON’T lose yourself in a GANG”, resource information line 703-GET-HELP and website www.preventgangsnova.org This soccer tournament is organized and funded by Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force. The grant does not cover food, therefore lunch is $6 per person. The deadline to submit a registration is Friday, June 14th. Saturday, June 22. Point of Hope Day Camp for children and their parents. Capital Caring, a leading local hospice provider, is holding a fun and therapeutic one-day program for children ages 6-14 and their parents who are grieving the death of a family member. Separate programs for children and adults. Both programs include group discussion, expressive arts and recreational activities. Thursdays, July 10-August 7. Money Talk: A Financial Course for Women. Women have unique financial needs. Most will at some time be on their own financially. Some will never marry, some will see their marriages end in divorce, and others will outlive their husbands. This course will provide you with information that you need to take charge of your financial future. The course, which will convene at the Arlington Central Library (1015 N. Quincy St.) from 6:30-8:30 p.m., includes five classes: July 10 Financial Basics, July 17 Insurance Basics, July 23 Investing Basics, July 31 Investing for Retirement, August 7 Planning for Future Life Events. Edu-Futuro’s Emerging Leaders Program: Part I (ELP I) is a leadership development and college prep program for Latino youth (8th through 12th grades) offered three times each year in the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students participate in activities to increase their leadership and communication skills, self-confidence, and prepare for college. Emerging Leaders matches students with young professional mentors who provide valuable advice in areas such as study skills, goal setting, and career planning. Students also visit universities, engage in community service, apply for and win scholarships, and are eligible for the Emerging Leaders Program: Part II. Emerging Leaders Program: Part I will be taking place in TWO locations this summer: June 25-August 3, Tuesdays 6:00pm-9:00pm and Saturdays 10:00am-12:30pm in Arlington or June 24- August 3, Mondays 6:00pm-9:00pm and Saturdays 10:00am-12:30pm in Falls Church.
