Columbia Pike Utility Undergrounding to Begin June 28th

Post date: Jun 17, 2010 6:39:39 PM

On June 28th, Arlington will begin utility undergrounding construction work along Columbia Pike from S. Wakefield St. to Four Mile Run. Crews will work during both day and night hours to relocate water and sewer utilities during the summer months. A gas line will also be relocated and all overhead utilities will be placed underground. The project is part of a comprehensive effort to transform the Pike into a “Main Street” to better serve one of Arlington’s most diverse cultural and business areas.

Delays Expected

The County aims to ensure the safety of all work crews and the community during this and other projects in the right-of-way. Motorist and transit riders should expect delays along the west end of Columbia Pike and, if possible, avoid the area. Periodic lane closures will be necessary, however at least one lane in each direction will be open throughout the project. Local transit will continue to run as scheduled along the Pike. However, riders should check http://www.commuterpage.com/ regularly for transit updates as construction may impact stops or routes in the future.

County staff is working with businesses in the immediate work area to ensure that customers continue to have access during construction.

Time Frame & More Information

The utility work will last about 15 months. Streetscape improvement work is expected to begin in summer 2011. Schedules are subject to VDOT approval and acquisition of right of way for improvements. The project is funded by federal secondary, state revenue-sharing and County-matching funds.
