September 24 - “Memory Matters!” Tala LaManna, MSW of JSSA

Do you wish you had a better memory for names, dates and other details? This workshop discusses effective strategies to maximize brain functioning and strengthen cognitive abilities. Learn the difference between “normal forgetting” and dementia. Participate in brain-training exercises that can help enhance memory and attention.

October 22 - “Stuck with Shots” Pam Prindle, RN of Foxhall Internists, PC

What is the difference between the seasonal flu vaccine and H1N1? When should we get the pneumonia vaccine? How does the shingles vaccine work? If I travel out of the country, what does the CDC recommend? Learn how routine and travel immunizations work and protect us from disease.

November 12 - “Diagnosing Dementia” Cissy Pottonat, MD

What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s? Is it natural to have memory issues as we age? How do we test for this? And what can we do to slow the progression down?

December 10 - “Healthy Muscles & Balance” Edward Allcock, DO, PTs Jill Kadish & Bianca Bass

Learn about the importance of maintaining balance as we age and navigate through our environments. What can we do to maintain or improve our muscle strength so we remain safe and possibly avoid falls?

November 16th - Community Memory Screenings at Walter Reed Multipurpose Center Screenings from 10:00am – 12:00pm and from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.

Virginia Hospital Center, Care Options and Arlington County will be sponsoring free, confidential memory screenings to promote proper detection of memory problems and provide education about successful aging. The face-to-face, noninvasive screening takes only about five to ten minutes administered by a qualified healthcare professional.
