Post date: Oct 19, 2014 4:36:10 PM

two wonderful opportunities coming up for a community conversation on Latino Immigration: Past, Present, and Future on Oct. 20 and Nov. 1:

· Mon, Oct. 20 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Kenmore Middle School (see attached flier): APS will host a screening of Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America. The movie is based on the landmark book Harvest of Empire by award-winning journalist Juan Gonzalez. Harvest of Empire takes an unflinching look at the role that U.S. economic and military interests played in triggering an unprecedented wave of immigration that is transforming our nation's cultural and economic landscape. For a brief preview, watch the trailer at www.harvestofempiremovie.com.

· Sat, Nov. 1 from 12:30-5 p.m. at Kenmore Middle School: School Board Vice Chair Dr. Emma Violand-Sanchez and Social Studies Supervisor Cathy Hix, in partnership with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, is hosting a screening of Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America, on Sat, Nov. 1 from 12:30-2 p.m. at Kenmore. A panel discussion and Q&A will take place from 2:15-4 p.m., and a reception will follow from 4-5 p.m.

o Latin American immigration is transforming the United States and Virginia. How will we ensure that new immigrants from Latin America become full participants in the life of the nation, and the Commonwealth? What will being a Virginian, and an American, mean to them? What do we need to know to understand the experience of recent immigrants from Latin America, especially children and their families? Hear the perspectives of leading scholars and the voices of immigrants themselves.

I’m attaching two individual fliers for each respective event.
